Feral Hog Removal
One of the fastest growing problems, for hunters and farmers alike, are the gangs of feral hogs that are taking over. Through sheer numbers and insatiable appetites, they consume much of the natural food sources needed by deer, turkey, and quail. Tougher, more aggressive, and much better prepared for a fight than deer, they’re far less susceptible to predation by coyotes and bobcats.
Many hunters tout their hog removal services through the using of dogs to catch them one at a time. The reality is that this simply moves the hogs your neighbor’s farm, or a different spot on your farm, for a short time. A single sow can produce multiple litters with 5-9 piglets each year and most sounders have multiple mature sows. It is not uncommon to see 25 or more hogs cleaning out newly planted fields at night.
The most effective means of reducing their numbers is through trapping them in large groups. Any hogs too wary to enter the trap are then eliminated by hunting or caught in a two stage trap using the remainder of the sounder to draw them in.
